Medical insurance the parents need
Each applicant needs private medical insurance valid at least 1 year from entry, with at least $100,000 of emergency coverage for health care, hospitalization and repatriation, from a Canadian insurer or an OSFI-authorized foreign insurer doing business in Canada. It must be paid in full or by instalments with a deposit; a quote is not accepted.
Document preparation only, not immigration or legal advice. In Canada only licensed immigration consultants (RCICs) and lawyers may give immigration advice for a fee (IRPA s. 91). Not affiliated with IRCC, the U.S. Department of State or any embassy. A letter of invitation does not guarantee a visa; the visa officer decides.
What IRCC requires in the letter
- A promise of financial support for the whole stay.
- The list and number of people counted in your family size, with each person’s name and date of birth.
- Proof that you (and a co-signing spouse) meet the minimum necessary income, usually your CRA notice of assessment.
- The usual invitation details: who you are, your status in Canada, who you invite, the purpose, length and where they stay.

FAQ
- What is the minimum income for a super visa?
- IRCC publishes a minimum necessary income by family size. In the table updated July 29, 2025: $30,526 for 1 person, $38,002 for 2, $46,720 for 3, $56,724 for 4, $64,336 for 5, $72,560 for 6, $80,784 for 7, plus $8,224 for each additional person.
- Who counts in the family size?
- You, your spouse or common-law partner, your dependent children (regardless of custody), the parents or grandparents you are inviting, earlier super visa holders still covered by a letter you or your spouse signed, and people you or your spouse sponsored whose undertaking is still in effect.
- Can my spouse’s income count?
- Yes. Your spouse or common-law partner can co-sign the letter if they are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or registered Indian, and their income is added. Siblings and other relatives cannot co-sign.
- Which year’s income does IRCC look at?
- Option 1: your total income (with a co-signer) meets the minimum in either of the 2 tax years before the application, shown on your notice of assessment. Option 2: in the year before the application you reached at least 75% of the minimum, and the parents’ own income covers the rest.
- What insurance do parents need for a super visa?
- Private medical insurance from a Canadian insurer (or an OSFI-authorized foreign insurer doing business in Canada), valid at least 1 year from entry, with at least $100,000 of emergency coverage for health care, hospitalization and repatriation. It must be paid in full or by instalments with a deposit.
- Does an invitation letter guarantee the visa?
- No. IRCC says a letter of invitation does not guarantee a visa; the officer also looks at the applicant’s ties, finances, medical exam and the purpose of the visit.
